Gillian Wearing’s photographs explore how public and private identities of ordinary people are self-fashioned and documented, using masks as a central theme. The masks, which range from literal disguises to voice dubbing, conceal the identities of her subjects and free them to reveal intimate secrets. In her portraits and self-portraits Wearing blurs the line between reality and fiction.
