Dirk Stewen: Night Exercises

Night Exercises showcases the delicate works on paper of Hamburg-based artist Dirk Stewen. Stewen appropriates pages from post-war era vintage catalogs of old masterpieces, removes their colorful reproductions, and inserts his own enigmatic, semi-abstract and figurative watercolors in their place. Often the absent photographs leave behind torn remnants, traces of glue, and floating subtitles, creating a conceptually rich and remarkably tactile surface on which the drawings come to life.
