• KARYN OLIVIER

  • Karyn Olivier’s practice dissects the unquestioned narratives embedded in public space, and the ways space is used to include and exclude people from civic life. Through both temporary and permanent sculptures and installations, she has actively engaged in reinterpreting the monument, and imagining a new topography of memory. Olivier explores themes of absence, invisibility, and displacement in her work — by turn drawing our attention to figures that are usually only represented on the periphery, and concealing those sites or sculptures that are overwhelmingly visible. Layering and juxtaposing images, she further asks the viewer to constantly question what they see, and what, by consequence, they don’t.
